How to check an AI answer without starting over

A practical five-step check for facts, assumptions, and useful uncertainty in an AI response.

A clear answer can still contain a wrong claim. You do not have to discard the entire response to check it. Start with the part that matters to your decision, then ask what would make that part true.

1. Find the claim you would act on

Suppose an assistant helps you plan a visit to a local museum. The suggested order of exhibits is an idea. “The museum closes at 18:00 on Sunday” is a factual claim. Check the opening time on the museum’s own website before relying on the plan.

2. Separate your information from its assumptions

Ask: “Which details came from my message, and which did you assume?” If you provided a timetable, a good answer should use that timetable. If you did not provide your travel time, an estimate should be labelled as an estimate. This makes the answer easier to inspect; it does not prove that the model’s explanation is correct.

Open the source and look for the exact detail. Does it refer to the right place, date, and situation? A real link to a museum homepage does not necessarily support a claim about a holiday schedule. When no source is available, treat the claim as unverified.

4. Try one meaningful follow-up

Change a constraint: “I can only arrive after 16:00.” Does the reply preserve the details that still apply and revise the parts that changed? Repeating the original answer in a friendlier tone is not the same as adapting the plan.

5. Keep a place for “not enough information”

A useful response may ask which museum you mean or say that it cannot verify current hours. Check whether the uncertainty matches what is missing. Avoid rewarding an assistant simply for refusing every question: an answerable question still deserves a useful answer.

Read accuracy alongside coverage

An accuracy percentage needs a denominator. A system that answers fewer questions can show a higher rate without getting more questions right. Look at correct answers, attempted answers, and unanswered questions together.
